Burma Task Force Releases Report Card On Senator Mitch McConnell

Senator Mitch McConnell prides himself on the name the public and Congress itself has bestowed upon him: the Grim Reaper of Legislation. He has lived up to this reputation and then some when it comes to bills related to the Rohingya and other pan-Burma conflicts. For years, the Republican Senate Majority Leader from Kentucky has actively blocked congressional legislation aimed at both delivering aid to the persecuted minorities of Burma and pursuing justice against the perpetrators, the Tatmadaw. In 2018, the day the US backed and supported the UN report which called for Burma generals to be prosecuted for genocide, Senator McConnell publicly refuted the findings, saying the Burma’s civilian leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, was “powerless” to stop the unfolding genocide. Only a month later, Senator McConnell again spoke against the official US stance by condemning the State Department’s own report on the atrocities in Northern Rakhine State, which is itself now widely considered the most comprehensive report on the conflict.

Senator McConnell has failed to cosponsor a single Burma bill or other piece of legislation proposed by either party. The bills and resolutions introduced to Congress are noticeably bipartisan, which only highlights Senator McConnell’s inaction.
