2026-08-19: Mohan Bhagwat – Sebrenica

In this newsletter:

ACTION ALERT

Would we allow the head of the Nazi Party to come to the US? Why are we okay with Bhagwat coming here?

The RSS sits at the centre of the Hindutva extremist movement which has helped drive state-sponsored discrimination, hate speech, violence against minorities, and the repression of journalists, activists and civil society in India.

Bhagwat’s presence would normalize the RSS and legitimize in the U.S. the exclusionary ideological movement causing deep concern among Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims, Christians, Dalits, and others.

Join us in demanding U.S. leaders bar him from entry!

Bhagwat is scheduled to speak at Madison Square Garden in New York on August 29, where over 5,000 Indian Americans are expected for the “Universal Oneness Celebrations.”

Why Are Republika Srpska Authorities Questioning Srebrenica Memorial Center Staff?

Justice For All condemns the Republika Srpska authorities for its mass police questioning on August 12 of 26 current and former employees of the Srebrenica Memorial Center.

This action, which followed the release of the Center’s report highlighting genocide denial, is a brazen act of intimidation that strikes at the heart of efforts to preserve the truth about the Srebrenica genocide.

“The mass questioning of the Memorial Center’s staff is a calculated effort to silence the truth, intimidate survivors and rewrite history for political gain,” said Imam Saffet Catovic, a former Bosnian diplomat and Director of U.N. Operations for Justice For All. “The Dayton Peace Agreement, a cornerstone of U.S. foreign policy, international diplomacy, and the Constitution of Bosnia and Herzegovina, is being systematically undermined.” Read full statement

DATA POINT: 94 MASS GRAVES exhumed in and around Srebrenica. The United Nations reports that 6,765 victims have been buried at the Srebrenica Memorial Center, while the search for the missing continues.

ACTION ALERT – Reuters: Cover the Protest, Not Just the Pivot

Reuters has produced strong reporting on India’s youth protests, Hindutva, the RSS and minority-rights concerns. However, its recent story on the BJP’s Gen-Z outreach provides less context than Reuters has offered elsewhere: no protester is quoted, and the RSS is described simply as the BJP’s “ideological parent” and a “Hindu RSS group.”

With RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat preparing for an international tour, this is a timely opportunity for Reuters to build on its previous reporting. We are asking Reuters to center affected youth, examine whether protesters’ grievances have been addressed, distinguish Hindu religious identity from Hindutva political ideology, and provide relevant human-rights context when covering the RSS and its expanding international outreach.

Israel is holding the bodies of around 1,700 Palestinians

REPORT: Haaretz reports that Israel is holding the bodies of around 1,700 Palestinians, with the Shin Bet chief among those opposing their release, arguing they could be needed for future negotiations. Most of the bodies are Palestinians from Gaza, along with 13 Palestinian prisoners from inside the occupied territories. Palestinian organizations, including JLAC and the National Campaign for the Recovery of Martyrs’ Bodies, say Israel’s stated justification for holding the bodies as bargaining chips has been exhausted following the return of living Israeli captives and the remains of Israeli soldiers. They argue that continuing to withhold the bodies amounts to collective punishment, prolonging the suffering of families who are unable to bury their loved ones.

New Human Rights Watch Report: Chinese Government Menaces Uyghur Diaspora

Visitors to East Turkistan Pressed to Monitor Activists, Australia’s Uyghur Language Schools

The Chinese government is interrogating Uyghur Australians visiting East Turkistan, pressing them to collect information on Uyghurs in Australia, including Uyghur language schools. The Chinese government exploits the vulnerability of separated Uyghur families as an opportunity for surveillance and strict monitoring of the Uyghur community in Australia, which has a chilling effect on diaspora activities.

Australia and other governments should respond to Beijing’s intimidation of the Uyghur diaspora with public statements, clear travel advisories, safe reporting channels, criminal investigations, and support for family reunification. Read the full report.

Kashmiris forced to celebrate Indian Independence Day by Force

Indian authorities in Indian-occupied Kashmir are compelling government employees and schools to participate in India’s Independence Day celebrations on Aug. 15, in what experts describe as an effort to impose patriotism on an occupied population.

Employees who refuse to participate have been threatened with suspension, while schools that do not hoist the Indian flag face threats of losing their recognition from the education board.

For many Kashmiris, the forced observance goes beyond a ceremonial requirement. It places public employees and students under pressure to visibly affirm allegiance to India, despite longstanding opposition to New Delhi’s occupation.
